How to Promote Your Indie CD

Posted by  in February 5th 2010

You are an independent musician and you have produced a fine Audio CD you want to share with the world? Then you have to realize that promotion, especially online promotion, is absolutely necessary in order to call the public’s attention to your music. But how can you do that in an efficient and furthermore affordable way? Below I’ll give you some helpful hints including online promotion, distribution of your new CD and other easy to realize things that will push your musical career.

Personal Website
The most important thing for an indie musician or band to begin with is launching a personal website including newsletters, online press kit, biography, picture gallery, concert dates, personal blog, audio samples of your songs etc. People will then find you easily in the web and get all the information they need.

Social Networks
Indie bands should benefit from numerous opportunities of so called social networks like Myspace, Facebook, last.fm and many others. Creating accounts there will help you to build fans, keep in touch with other musicians and increase traffic on your personal website. Don’t forget to hyper link each of these sites together on your profiles so that visitors can easily check out all your profiles on different websites.

Press Release
Releasing a press statement of your indie music production written by a publicist or at least by a semiprofessional writer generates free publicity and is many times more valuable than many advertisements you could buy. Don’t forget to target your press release personally to the specific reporter of the concerned newspaper, magazine, radio station or whatever! It’s also clever to contact each journalist personally, and ask how they want to receive press releases (mail, fax, or e-mail).

CD Release Party
Throw a CD Release Party. Find an appropriate location (a local club should do) and play live ’cause there’s no better way to get people enthusiastic for your music. A thrilling concert can be your breakthrough. Invite people who could push your career and don’t forget to put up your new CD and other promotion items for sale.

Distribution
Chose a reliable distribution company for your new CD! There are several distributors specializing in the distribution of independent music. noMainstream-Music.com, for example, is one of them. A webpage for the sale of your CD will be created including soundclips, album info, link to your personal website, picture gallery and you can even announce your tour dates there.

All you have to do is send them your CDs and they will put your CD into their database and provide storage. In addition they undertake the whole sales procedure and offer all current methods of payment.

Musicians set the price for their CD. noMainstream-Music keeps $4,- of the net sales for each CD sold, you keep the rest. They will immediately advise you as soon as they need fresh supplies. Very important detail: Musicians retain all legal rights on their songs and can cancel the distribution at any time. In a conventional record deal or distribution contract, musicians only get $1-$2 per CD sold. Selling your CDs via noMainstream-Music, you can make $4-$12 per CD.

Indie Music Industry – Believe in Yourself

Posted by  in January 29th 2010

I have been doing this music caper for twenty years.

However, I have only believed in myself for the past five years and in that time I have achieved much more than the fifteen years preceding it.

I don’t remember that moment when I finally climbed up the top of the mountain and put my flag of belief into the summit but I remember the feeling of knowing that it was okay to be doing what I am doing and it was also okay to be ME.

I can’t tell you how to believe in yourself, only you can do that but I can tell you that if you are lacking in belief then you are not alone.

We live in a world that is not overly tolerant to artistic endeavours. I mean just the other day I had someone ask me at a party the most boring question.

Q – “What do you do for a living?”

A – “I am a musician”

Q – “Oh, that’s nice. So what is it that you really do?”

That really threw me back. I was initially insulted but I proudly answered that being a musician was my ‘real job’.

We as musicians are always being told that we:

1. Can never make a living out of a hobby

2. Need something to fall back on (just incase this ‘music thing’ doesn’t work out)

3. Should go and get a real job.

If you do have a day job, I am certainly not telling you to give it up.

All I am saying is that when you have belief in yourself and what you do any decision that you make is made for you only, not to appease well meaning friends or family.

Be proud of what you do but don’t be too proud to not take advice from people that have trodden the path that you are about to take. Use this channel for instance to ask any question that you want. I will only give you encouragement because I have been there myself.

Always remember, no matter how many articles you read, how many courses you take, how many bands you play in or how many gigs you do, you can’t get others to believe in you unless you start believing in yourself.

Starting tomorrow, go and look at yourself in the mirror and tell yourself that you deserve to be a musician and that you are not going to feel guilty about it.

After that its time to go forth and ROCK (or country or punk or whatever you do)!!!

Your Indie Music Career

Posted by  in January 25th 2010

I have written this article to help you along the bewildering road that leads to a successful Indie Music Career. The intention, thoughts and suggestions in this article are simple, I am not saying that they’re always easy. There’s work to be done, but it’s the kind of work that’s well within your skill. Over the years I have noticed the difficulties that most Indie Music folks have, even those who put in a lot of good work, one of the most difficult is using their time on the wrong things. When you finish reading this article you should have a clearer direction for Your Indie Music Career.

I have written some attitudes which I believe will help you as they have helped me over the years:

1) Whenever you take action to promote Your Indie Music Career, you must understand what your purpose is and why you’re taking the action. The best way to make sure you’re doing things in the right way is to develop a plan that makes sense, make sure that you have very focused goals, and realize that you need to provide a benefit to everyone you connect with in the music business.

2) Think outside the box. We are creatures of habit. We become set in our ways and develop routines, which is why it’s no surprise that we slip into narrow ways of doing things. Habits are quite useful when they involve, for instance, recording, mixing, and mastering, being on time for your recording session and tuning your guitar. But when it comes to promoting Your Indie Music Career, this routine way of thinking and acting is stunting your growth. When you market yourself the same way you’ve always done it, or the same way every other artist is doing it, you become part of the Indie Music bog were everyone looks and sounds the same.

Over the next several weeks, I am going to nudge and prompt you to be different, to expand your thinking, to focus your goals and actions, in essence, to become a true Indie Music Marketing Machine. I won’t be talking about national advertising, music videos or worldwide distribution. I am going to encourage you to understand that this is Your Indie Music Career and what happens is completely up to you:

* How to work from the trenches with little or no money.
* Using overlooked techniques to give your music more exposure.
* Developing a following one fan at a time.
* How to use each success as a stepping stone to bigger and more significant success.

I will challenge you to do some serious soul searching and then commit your thoughts to paper. In these next articles I will take the main points covered throughout the article and ask you to write in your notebook your thoughts for Your Indie Music Career. I urge you to use your notes. For it is here where my suggestions come to life and become your own. By writing in your notebook, you’ll get a clearer idea of where you are and in what direction you need to be heading.

What Is Hip Hop – Hip Hop Culture, Clothing, Jewelry And Music

Posted by  in January 25th 2010

Hip hop as defined by The American Heritage College Dictionary is “The popular culture of big city and especially inner city youth, characterized by graffiti art, break dancing, and rap music-of or relating to this culture.”

Today, most people characterize hip hop as simply rap music. They do not truly understand the history and the current influence hip-hop has on the whole youth culture. You see rap music is just one element of hip hop.

True hip hop isn’t just about music; it’s a culture, a way of life, a language, a fashion, a set of values, and a unique perspective. Hip hop is an economy; it’s the ability to take the inner-city negative cash flow system of hustling, pushing, pimping, and banging, and turn it into a multi-million, or possibly even billion dollar business.

So hip hop then is about dance, art, expression, pain, love, racism, sexism, broken families, hard times, and overcoming adversity. It’s about trying to live out the American dream from the bottom up. It’s about trying to make something out of nothing; about the youth culture of New York City and other urban cities taking over the world.

With this culture comes hip hop clothing, jewelry and music. Also terminologies such as: Breakin’ (dance), Emceein’ (rap), Graffiti (aerosol art), Deejayin, Beatboxin, Street Fashion, Street Knowledge, Street Entrepreneurialism came into being.

Most youngsters everywhere opts for hip hop clothing and jewelry. Jewelry is a matter of prestige and sign of wealth for most individuals. The hottest stars and athletes find it interesting to wear such jewelry. The jewelry is worn even by men who do not give any importance to jewelry and other fashion accessories.

Metal Guitar Solos – Can I Play One Now?

Posted by  in January 24th 2010

Metal guitar solos are the product of an age where young men used the guitar as a way of venting their rage and at the same time attracting ******. These men formed groups with such names as Black Sabbath, Iron Butterfly, Mottley Crue and Metallica. A feature of these groups is the guitar solo which was in direct competition with the lead vocalist for the attention of the audience.

Metal guitar solos are not as difficult to play as you might think. If you have some experience at learning guitar scales of any kind then you have some material to work with. Blues and rock are the ancestors of metal, so if you know something about these musical styles you will have an advantage when you start to play metal solos.

Metal bands promote the image of wild and crazy guys letting loose with their inspired songs and guitar solos, so can a guitarist with not much training and not much musical talent play metal guitar solos. In a word, yes. Some heavy metal guitar bands may have learnt three chords and gone on to fame and fortune, but I cannot recall hearing of any. Barre chords, pentatonic scales, memorizing the notes on the fretboard are all elements of the metal guitar solo player’s education.

The first thing you need to know is that playing metal guitar solos will cost you some money for equipment. You will be playing on a solid body guitar possibly fitted with locking whammy bar to keep your guitar in tune during heavy workouts. To truly get in the spirit of heavy metal solos you will probably be better off with a Gibson Flying V or a similarly attention-grabbing model. You also might want to consider a double cutaway model guitar to make sure you are playing at frets other guitar players never knew existed.

Feedback is extremely important in heavy metal solos so you will be always playing at maximum volume. To enhance you solos you will need some basic effects like echo and distortion. The Leslie speaker effect of the days of Jimi Hendrix and Dave Gilmour has never really gone out of fashion and if this is your bag you can go for the Univibe. For that real touch of authenticity buy yourself a tube amplifier.

Now you have your heavy metal guitar and amp set up, what techniques do you need at your fingertips to play metal guitar solos? Well, hammer-ons, pull-offs and tapping are your basics. Sweep picking makes you sound like a virtuoso but requires some work to learn. The techniques you use might be standard but how you use then depends on who your heavy metal role model is. There is a vast difference between Jimmy Page and Van Halen.

Alternate tunings you might want to experiment with for your metal guitar solos are: dropped B which is B-F#-B-e-g#-c# and dropped A – A-E-A-d-f#-b. You will need heavy gauge strings for these tunings and you might find that they are not really what you want but it is worthwhile to give them a try to check out how they sound.

What hard rock can I let my 9 year old listen to?

Posted by  in January 20th 2010
My son is getting more interested in hard rock type music. Probably due in part to him skateboarding more. We went to the skate store and he wanted patches and stickers for his board and backpack. Most of the things are for bands. I told him I wouldn’t let him be a poseur and wear stuff for a band he doesn’t know. He likes old rock that I have had him listen to (AC/DC, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, etc.) and some newer alternative stuff (Green Day, Fall Out Boy, Blink 182), but there is an entire genre of hard rock that I would love him to be able to listen to, but can’t. Can anyone recommend some hard rock that is not totally inappropriate (ie. – no Hatebreed, Lamb of God, Slipknot, etc.)?
